ARMED FORCES RETIREMENT HOME
2009-10-02 JESCO, Inc. Mechanical-Electrical Division is currently installing the mechanical-electrical portion of the 817,000 SF Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, Mississippi for the U. S. General Services Administration.
The project structure is 3 residential towers, a community level and a parking facility of approximately 400 vehicles. The overall geometry of the building is organized in response to the coastline and the orientation of the site. The residential towers are oriented to provide a view of the water from every resident room. The first floor community level containing all resident support and activity functions is rotated with respect to the tower – coastline orthogonal to orient with the layout of the site. The juxtaposition of the residential towers with respect to the plinth base resulting from this rotation, creates dynamic spaces.
One of the features that make this design a success is the compactness of the plan and the efficiency by which it is served by horizontal and vertical circulation. The advantage of this arrangement is that travel distance from any vertical circulation core to any particular destination on the plinth community is reduced, a critical consideration for a senior, limited mobility population.
